How to Protect Your Air Conditioner During a Thunderstorm or Hurricane
If we’re talking severe weather, it’s no surprise to Floridians and Tampa residents that we experience a heightened amount of inclement weather, including thunderstorms, lightning storms, and hurricanes, compared to other parts of the nation.
While we’re sure you’re accustomed to this type of weather and the measures you must take to protect yourself and your family, the thought of protecting your air conditioner may not be at your mind. That’s why we’ve come up with a small list of what you can do so next time; you don’t even need to think about it!
If a storm is heading into the area, take the following actions to protect your air conditioner until the bad weather passes:
Turn Off Your Air Conditioner
Before a storm, turn off your air conditioner from the breaker if you experience high winds. If high winds aren’t in the forecast, you can turn your AC off from your thermostat. Either way, if lightning strikes your unit or there’s a power surge, your unit could be damaged — or worse — it could spark an electrical fire.
Tie Down Your Unit
If you’re expecting strong winds and your system is elevated, securing the AC down with hurricane straps is a good idea. Be sure to tighten any loose parts of your air conditioner and remove any window systems you may have.
Cover the AC
Covering your air conditioner with a tarp is also a good idea. High winds, trees, and other landscaping items can fall or fly around and hit your unit, as well as get debris in your system. Covering your unit helps to prevent unforeseeable damage and can save you in the long run. However, be sure to uncover your AC as soon as it’s safe to do so; otherwise, mold can grow in your vents.
